Unemployment in March stood below 400 thousand people for the first time in ten years

The number of Portuguese unemployed in March fell 2.8% to 393.3 thousand people, a number that, for the first time in ten years, stood below the 400 thousand threshold.

The unemployment fell 16.6% in March in comparison to the homologous period, with 78.1 thousand unemployed. The number of unemployed population stood at 393.3 thousand, below the 400 thousand threshold for the first time in a decade. Youth unemployment fell 23.6%, to 42.3 thousand.

According to data revealed this Thursday by IEFP (Institute of Employment and Vocational Training), employment centers had 393,335 unemployment signed in the end of March. In comparison to the homologous month, the decrease was 16.6%, 78,139 less people.

Youth unemployment also registers decreases, of 6.2% in comparison to February, to 42.3 thousand people, and 23.6% in an homologous comparison. This age group represents 10.7% of the total.

Long-term unemployment decreased to 188.4 thousand people, with a 0.9% decrease in comparison to February and 17.4% in comparison to March of 2017.

When regarding just March, employment centers received 42,650 registrations, 8,198 less than in the same month of last year, but 1,434 more people than in February of 2018.
