Unemployment aid recipients at lowest since 2002

These data were revealed by the Portuguese Social Security: the number of people receiving unemployment benefits, 184,077, stands close to the 2002 amount.

The number of people receiving unemployment benefits was 185.473 in August, 14.3% less than in the same month of last year and 1.9% less than in the previous month, according to official data disclosed this Wednesday.

According to Social Securities’ monthly statistics, the number of people benefiting from unemployment aids in August of 2017 was the lowest since January 2002, when that number was 184,077.

In a gender analysis, there was a 9.7% decrease in the number of women receiving unemployment benefits and a 19.1% decrease for men, in comparison to the same period of the previous year. In terms of age groups, there was a general decrease, although more accentuated in the age group of people between 45 and 54 years-old (19% less) and in the age group between 35 and 44 years-old (13.8%).

The average unemployment subsidy registered in August was 462.22 euros, 0.8% more than in the previous month, as well as a 1.9% homologous increase.

According to the last data from IEFP (Institute of Employment and Vocational Training), the number of unemployed in job centers was 418.2 thousand people in August.
