Equinix purchased Itconic, the company in charge of one of the most important data centers in Portugal. The deal is closed, it is worth 215 million euros and it includes three other centers in Spain.

The North American multinational company Equinix announced the acquisition of Itconic, the company which holds the data center in Prior Velho (near Lisbon’s airport), one of the largest in Portugal. The deal has already been closed and Equinix will pay 215 million euros. With this purchase, the technology company will expand its operations both in Portugal and in Spain, adding 250 employees to the team.

Among the assets acquired are also other data centers in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. All in all, there are 320,000 gross square meters of space used for information storage servers and other cloud services. The business also comprehends the company’s subsidiary CloudMas, which adds to Equinix portfolio a “highly experienced team of technology experts, with deep knowledge” in this kind of infrastructures, the company stated in a press release.

Although it is not well known among the general public, Equinix assures a significant parcel of the world structure for providing internet, and it is also responsible for some submarine cable systems — which are cables which cross entire oceans and enable communication between continents, as an alternative to satellites.

According to the note sent to the press, Equinix will, therefore, be able to provide their services to over 400 clients in the Iberian Peninsula, including brands like L’Oreal, Deloitte, BNP Paribas or even Real Madrid. According to the company, the business will also increase the traffic between Europe, Latin America and Africa, because of the recently installed submarine cables. “Some of the submarine cables are already connected to Itconic’s Lisbon data center”, the company states.

Eric Schwartz, president of Equinix for the European, Middle Eastern and African market, stated: “With the acquisition of Itconic, we will continue to deliver the level of excellence and Interconnection that the industry expects and which our costumers demand”. Faustino Jiménez, Itconic’s CEO, highlighted how proud he was of being a part of a “world-leading company”.
