Portugal M&A activity drops 28% through August
Portugal recorded 327 deals worth €5.4 billion in the first eight months of 2026, with both volume and value down sharply from a year earlier.
Portugal’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market recorded 327 transactions worth more than €5.4 billion between January and August, down 28% in deal count and 59% in value from a year earlier, according to TTR Data figures provided to ECOnews.
In August alone, Portugal logged 18 transactions across M&A, private equity, venture capital and asset acquisitions, less than half the level seen in August 2025. Of the more than 300 deals involving Portuguese companies in the first eight months of the year, 287 were completed and about 32% had a disclosed price.
Real estate was again the busiest sector, followed by technology and business and professional support services. Energy did not rank among the top sectors by number of deals, but it featured in some of the largest transactions, including EDP Brasil’s roughly €700 million purchase of 100% of EDP Renováveis Brasil from EDP Renewables, and Galp Energia’s €420 million acquisition of a Spanish wind portfolio from Acciona Energía.
Healthcare also stood out. Healthcare Activos bought three hospitals in Lisbon, Porto and Albufeira for €250 million, while Sword Health’s $285 million acquisition of Germany’s Kaia Health ranked among the largest deals involving Portuguese buyers. In venture capital, the biggest round was Preply’s €130 million financing, in which Indico Capital Partners took part.
