Portugal car output rises 14.2% in April
Portugal assembled 31,084 vehicles in April, up 14.2% from a year earlier, with almost all output shipped abroad, underscoring the sector’s export role.
Portugal’s automotive production rose 14.2% year on year in April to 31,084 vehicles, according to data released by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP), highlighting the sector’s continued importance for the country’s exports.
In the first four months of 2026, factories in Portugal produced 116,352 vehicles, up 7.3% from the same period a year earlier. ACAP said 98.4% of all vehicles made in Portugal were destined for foreign markets, supporting the country’s trade balance.
Europe remained the main export market, taking 72.3% of Portuguese vehicle production. Germany accounted for 19.9% of exports, followed by Turkey with 14.4%, Italy with 13% and France with 11.6%. Africa ranked second with 2.6%, led by Tunisia at 1.1%, while Asia accounted for 1.9%.
Heavy vehicle assembly rose 111.8% in April to 36 units. Between January and April, heavy vehicle output increased 33.3% year on year to 88 units. Of those, 87.5% were exported, equivalent to 77 vehicles, with Germany taking 74% and England 26%, according to ACAP.
