Paulo Carmona to Lead Infraestruturas de Portugal
Paulo Carmona, current director-general of Energy and Geology, will become the new president of Infraestruturas de Portugal, starting in May.
Paulo Carmona, currently the director-general of the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology, has been appointed as the new president of Infraestruturas de Portugal, ECO reports. His appointment has been approved by the Commission for Recruitment and Selection for Public Administration (CReSAP), and he is expected to assume his new role in May. This leadership change is significant as Infraestruturas de Portugal manages the country’s road and rail infrastructure.
Carmona will replace Miguel Cruz, whose term, along with the rest of the board, ended in late 2024 but continued due to the absence of new leadership elections. Carmona’s extensive experience includes roles as CEO of Prio, president of the National Entity for the Fuel Market, and strategic consultant for the Energy Sector Regulatory Authority. He holds a degree in Business Administration and Management from the Portuguese Catholic University.
As president, Carmona will oversee an ambitious investment plan, particularly in the railway sector. Key projects include the high-speed Porto-Lisbon line, as well as the Porto-Vigo and Lisbon-Madrid lines, the latter involving the Third Tagus Crossing, which will enhance access to Lisbon’s new airport. Additionally, the company is tasked with completing investments outlined in the National Railway Plan.
In the road sector, Infraestruturas de Portugal has been directed by the government to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for priority road projects. Short and medium-term investments are supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), including repairs to infrastructure damaged by storms earlier this year.
