Portugal is the seventh country with the most bookings in Europe
A study carried out by Amadeus and UN Tourism shows Portugal as the fifth destination with the most searches and the fourth with the most bookings in Southern and Mediterranean Europe.
Portugal is among the ten most popular destinations in Europe. According to the report published by Amadeus and UN Tourism, it ranks seventh among the countries with the most bookings and searches between May 2024 and April 2025. The podium is made up of Spain, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Looking at Southern and Mediterranean Europe, Portugal is the fifth destination with the most searches and the fourth with the most bookings, at a time when tourism has never weighed so heavily on the national GDP. Spain, Italy and Turkey occupy the top three in both searches and bookings.
In terms of cities, Lisbon is sixth on the list, both in terms of searches and bookings. Istanbul, Rome and Madrid continue to be the most searched and booked destinations.
But the capital is not the only Portuguese city featured in the ‘Travel Insights 2025: Focus on Europe’ report, which also shows that “Funchal is experiencing substantial growth in search interest — with annual increases of between 24% and 31%, but [which] are not yet reflected in the top booked destinations”.
The destinations with the highest growth in terms of bookings between May 2024 and April 2025 are Alicante (+15% year-on-year), followed by Palma and Ponta Delgada (both +10%).
Among the 30 largest tourist destinations, Azerbaijan was the fastest-growing, recording a 26% increase in air bookings compared to the previous year.
