"According to the provisional results, the general government balance in 2021 was €5.97 billion, which corresponded to 2.8% of GDP (-5.8% in 2020)," the INE said.

The general government deficit, on national accounts, fell to 2.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2021, below the government’s official target, after having soared to 5.8% in 2020, Statistics Portugal (INE) said on Friday.

“According to the provisional results, the general government balance in 2021 was €5.97 billion, which corresponded to 2.8% of GDP (-5.8% in 2020),” the INE said.

In the state budget proposal for 2022, which was rejected in October, the government estimated a deficit of 4.3% of GDP, but the finance ministry had anticipated that the deficit in national accounts, which counts for international comparisons, would be below the target.
