The General Direction of the Budget (DGO) announced that the pandemic cost Portugal €6.75 billion until November, due to €6.23 billion in extra expenses and €518 million less revenue.

On the revenue side, the DGO highlights the impact associated with the suspension of corporate tax payments on account, estimated at €265.1 million and the effect of the exemption from paying the Single Social Tax (TSU), estimated at €218.6 million.

As for expenses, support for companies and employment was €3.39 billion, particularly for the Apoiar programme (€1.07 billion), support for the transport sector (€603.5 million), extraordinary support for the progressive recovery of activity (€533 million) and furloughs (€367.5 million).

A year ago, the DGO said that from January to November 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic had an overall impact of €4.3 billion.
