EU unemployment falls in September, but rises in Portugal

The unemployment rate in Portugal rose from 6.3% in August to 6.4% in September, according to Eurostat.

Unemployment fell in the European Union and the Euro area in September, both in comparison with the previous month and with the same period a year earlier, to 6.7% and 7.4% respectively, according to Eurostat. On the opposite side, Portugal saw the unemployment rate rise by 0.9% q/q, to 6.4%.

Looking at the remaining member states, the vast majority recorded a fall in unemployment, with Portugal breaking the trend. Compared to September 2020, the unemployment rate fell in Portugal, whereas in that period, marked more strongly by the pandemic, it stood at 8%.

Eurostat estimates that 14.324 million men and women in the EU, of which 12.079 million in the Euro area, were unemployed in September 2021. Compared to August 2021, the number of unemployed people decreased by 306,000 in the EU and 255,000 in the Euro area.
