Tourist trips up 83.9% in Q2 compared to last year

Tourist travel by residents in Portugal increased 83.9% in the second quarter compared to the same period of 2020, heavily marked by the pandemic.

Tourist travel by residents in Portugal increased 83.9% in the second quarter compared to the same period of 2020, but was still 35.4% below pre-pandemic levels, having been almost exclusively carried out within the country (96.9%), Statistics Portugal (INE) said on Wednesday.

“In the second quarter of 2021, residents in Portugal made 3.6 million trips, which corresponded to an increase of 83.9% compared to the same period of the previous year (-57.6% in the first quarter of 2021), however, still below the values recorded in the second quarter of 2019 (-35.4%, when 5.6 million trips were made),” the INE said.

By destination of trips, 96.9% took place inside Portugal, corresponding to 3.5 million trips, more than 10 percentage points above the percentage recorded in the second quarter of 2019 (85.2%).

Conversely, trips to foreign destinations “reduced their expression” to 111,700 (3.1% of the total; 14.8% in the second quarter of 2019).
