Sonae MC's investment to expand the distribution centres in Azambuja and Maia, the latter planned for 2022, is around €50 million, including structure and equipment.

Sonae MC announced a €50 million investment in the expansion of the distribution centres in Azambuja, Lisbon district, and Maia, Porto, which will go ahead next year.

“The project results from Sonae MC’s investment to expand the Azambuja and Maia distribution centres, the latter planned for 2022, at around €50 million, between structure and equipment,” the company announced in a statement.

The expansion in the Azambuja centre, which has 70,000 square metres (m2), created 300 jobs and will increase the capacity to supply Continente shops in the Centre and South of Portugal, as well as the Azores and Madeira.

According to data released by the company, every day over 9,000 pallets of products leave to supply Continente shops.

The expansion project for this warehouse includes the integration of a new fish centre, as well as a new packing and preparation unit for refrigerated fish.

Sonae MC intends to concentrate the delivery of fresh products from shops in the South in the same location, thus allowing a 20% reduction in deliveries and 1,400,000 kilometres travelled per year, equivalent to an annual saving of 1,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).
