Overnight stays by resident tourists reaches 4.2 million in August

In total, the tourist accommodation sector in Portugal recorded 2.5 million guests and 7.5 million overnight stays in August 2021.

Overnight stays of resident tourists in August reached the highest monthly figure since records began, increasing 24.2% year-on-year to 4.2 million, according to Statistics Portugal (INE).

According to data released this Thursday by INE, overnight stays by tourists from external markets grew by 94.5% in August, totalling 3.3 million.

Compared to August 2019, a growth of 22.6% in resident overnight stays and a decrease of 46.9% in non-resident overnight stays are observed.

In total, the tourist accommodation sector in Portugal recorded 2.5 million guests and 7.5 million overnight stays in August 2021, corresponding to increases of 35.6% and 47.6%, respectively (+60.4% and +73.0% in July, in the same order).

The levels reached in August 2021 were, however, lower than in the same month of 2019, with the number of guests and overnight stays decreasing by 23.6% and 22.1%, respectively.

Statistics Portugal also informs that the bedroom occupancy rate stood at 61.6%, “15.0 p.p. above August 2020, although 11.0 p.p. below the ratio registered in August 2019 (72.6%).”
