Government expects to raise €25 million with taxes on flights and single-use plastics
With the new carbon tax on air and sea travel and the tax on single-use plastic packaging, the government expects €25 million in additional revenue next year.
The new carbon tax on air and sea travel (cruises) and the tax on plastic bags, single-use food containers, and other packaging will give the State an estimated €25 million in additional revenue from next year, according to the Público newspaper.
Both measures were included in the State Budget for this year: the carbon tax, already in force since July 1, should generate €15 million in its first year, while the tax on single-use plastic packaging, to be applied from January 1 2022, will represent a slice of €10 million.
As of 2023, the tax on single-use plastic packaging will also apply to aluminium packaging, but the sector is still waiting for the publication of the respective regulation, to be elaborated by the Ministries of Finance and Environment.
