The Commission has given Portugal a two-month deadline to report on the compliance of its domestic legislation with EU rules on public contracts and concessions.

The European Commission has on Thursday given Portugal a two-month deadline to report on the compliance of its domestic legislation with European Union (EU) rules on public contracts and concessions.

By sending an additional letter of formal notice – the first was sent on October 10 2019 – the EU executive requests further clarifications on the national legislation, amended in May, in particular on “the refusal of direct awards of contracts, accelerated procedures, local and regional preferences and the modification of contracts”, according to a statement.

As part of the monthly package of infringement proceedings published today, the EU executive is giving Portugal two months to clarify the doubts, failing which the European Commission will move on to the second stage of the infringement procedure, with the sending of a reasoned opinion.
