The coordinator of the vaccination task force said Portugal may receive about one million Covid-19 vaccines in the next two weeks.

Portugal may receive about one million Covid-19 vaccines in the next two weeks, the coordinator of the vaccination task force, against a cut of AstraZeneca vaccines said on Tuesday.

“We will lose about 470,000 vaccines from AstraZeneca because they no longer make sense in our plan, but there is an effort – both from Infarmed and the ministry of health – to acquire vaccines from European partners, and that effort can bring about a million vaccines, which is very important for the acceleration of the vaccination process,” Henrique Gouveia e Melo said.

In a speech made at the meeting at Infarmed, in Lisbon, which brings together experts, members of the government, the speaker of parliament and the president of Portugal to analyze the epidemiological situation of Covid-19 in Portugal, the vice-admiral responsible for the task force also acknowledged that 5.4 million fewer vaccines were received in the last three quarterscompared to initial forecasts.

Concerning the last quarter of 2021, Gouveia e Melo said that the initial expectation pointed to the reception of 8.5 million vaccines, but, in the end, only 5.2 million vaccines reached the country.
