State of calamity extended until August 8

The state of calamity​​​​​​​, the highest response to disaster situations in the Basic Law of Civil Protection, came into force on  May 1 and has been renewed every fortnight.

Portugal’s government on Thursday extended the state of calamity in mainland Portugal until 8 August as part of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The cabinet approved a resolution that extends the state ​​​​​​​of calamity throughout the mainland until 11h59 p.m. on August 9 2021 and changes the measures applicable to certain municipalities,” said a statement released after the cabinet meeting.

The current state of calamity​​​​​​​ ends at 11h59 p.m. on Sunday.

According to the most recent report by Agence France-Presse, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 4,128,543 deaths worldwide, among more than 191.9 million cases of infection by the new coronavirus.

In Portugal, since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, 17,248 people have died, and 943,244 cases of infection have been recorded, according to the Directorate-General of Health.
