Benfica president in court for second day of questioning

Benfica businessman and chairman Luís Filipe Vieira, 72, was one of four detained on Wednesday in an investigation involving business deals and financing in excess of €100 million.

The president of Benfica and the other three detainees in the ‘Red Card’ process have arrived at the Central Court of Criminal Instruction to continue the first judicial interrogations.

At 08h49 a.m., the vans carrying the detainees, accompanied by several police officers, entered the court after staying a second night at a Lisbon police station.

Benfica businessman and chairman Luís Filipe Vieira, 72, was one of four detained on Wednesday in an investigation involving business deals and financing in excess of €100 million, with losses for the state and some companies.

According to the Central Department of Investigation and Prosecution (DCIAP), the facts in question are likely to constitute “crimes of abuse of trust, qualified fraud, forgery, tax fraud and money laundering”.

There were 44 search warrants to companies, homes, offices of lawyers and a bank in Lisbon, Torres Vedras and Braga. One of the places where searches were carried out was the SAD of Benfica, which, in a statement, said it had not been charged.

Tiago Vieira, son of the president of Benfica, the football agent Bruno Macedo and the businessman José António dos Santos, known as “the king of chickens”, were also arrested in the same process.​​​​​​
