The British government published this Friday the list of countries from which self-isolation is not required for returning holidaymakers.

Boris Johnson’s government announced this Friday that Portugal is included on the ‘green list’, from which quarantine is not required for returning British holidaymakers. Not all European countries are on this list.

The British government will lift travel restrictions from May 17. From that date, the British will be able to make non-essential trips and Portugal’s doors will be open to these tourists.

The list in question only applies to England, but Portugal was already considered a safe country for the Welsh and Scots as well.

According to the British Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, there are a total of 12 countries on this ‘green list’ which will be reviewed every three weeks. Besides Portugal, Gibraltar and Israel are also on this list. Anyone travelling to these countries will only need to test negative for Covid-19 on their return to the UK, without requiring to self-isolate for 10 full days.

This is good news for Portuguese tourism, particularly in the Algarve. However, some European countries also highly popular with the British have not been so lucky. According to Grant Shapps, France, Spain and Greece are on the ‘yellow list’ which means that besides the Covid-19 test, self-isolation will be mandatory.
