Unemployment jumps 32.4% in 12 months to January

The number of unemployed people registered in jobcentres in Portugal increased by 32.4 percent in January compared to the same month in 2020, touching May 2017 highs.

The number of unemployed registered in jobcentres in Portugal increased by 32.4% in January year-on-year and 5.5% compared to December, according to data released on Monday by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).

According to the IEFP, at the end of January, 424,359 job seekers were registered in the employment services of the mainland and autonomous regions.

This number represents 71.2% of a total of 596,290 job applications.
