Portugal will get first loan under SURE program on Tuesday

The president of the European Commission revealed to RTP that the first tranche of the European Union’s SURE program will be transferred to Portugal this Tuesday, which amounts to 3 billion euros. The loan is intended to support workers and companies and the programme has an overall value of 5,900 million.

“I have good news for Portugal, because tomorrow [Tuesday] Portugal will receive the first tranche of the SURE program, which will provide 3 billion euros to Portugal,” Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement broadcast by the public television station RTP.

The European leader explained that the SURE programme “supports companies and workers”. ” It tells companies not to dismiss workers, even if there is not enough work to do. Keep them in the companies,” said Ursula von der Leyen.

The Portuguese government expected this first tranche to arrive in November.

SURE is one of the three “safety nets” of the EU’s emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a total budget of 540 billion euros, which was approved by eurozone and EU finance ministers at a European Council on April 23.
