Country’s inflation in January third lowest in EU, at 0.8% – Eurostat

After having registered in the last two months of 2019 the lowest annual inflation rate in the euro zone, Portugal had in the first month of this year the third lowest in the European Union.

 

Portugal’s rate of consumer inflation in January was the third lowest in the European Union, at 0.8% against an EU-wide rate of 1.7%, according to the EU statistics office, Eurostat.

The figures confirm flash estimates released on 31 January.

Inflation in the euro zone as a whole in January was 1.4%, marking an acceleration from a rate of 1.3% in December.

Portugal’s rate in January was double the 0.4% rate seen in December, while the EU inflation in December had been 1.6%.

In a year-on-year comparison with January 2019, the inflation rate in the euro zone was unchanged, while for the EU as a whole it rose by 0.2 of a percentage point. The rate for Portugal also increased by 0.2 of a point, from 0.6% in January 2019.

In the last two months of last year, Portugal had had the lowest inflation rate in the euro zone, at 0.2% in November and 0.4% in December.

In January, only Italy and Cyprus had lower inflation, at 0.4% and 0.7% respectively, with Portugal tied in third with Denmark.
