UNESCO approved the World Day of the Portuguese Language, which will be celebrated on May 5th.

World Day of the Portuguese Language will be celebrated annually on May 5, as already happens in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. The decision was taken on Thursday at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, at the meeting of its executive council.

All the Portuguese-speaking countries came together to introduce this proposal but received the support of countries such as Argentina, Chile, Georgia, Luxembourg or Uruguay, and the proposal was adopted unanimously.

In the proposal presented to the executive council, the Portuguese-speaking countries argued that the Portuguese language is the most spoken in the southern hemisphere and that it was also the language of the first wave of globalization, leaving words and marks in other languages in the world.

The day of the Portuguese language will be officially marked at the headquarters of UNESCO with musical presentations, literature, exhibitions or any other cultural representation and its organization will be in charge of the countries that have Portuguese as their official language.

The proposal now approved by the Executive Board will be ratified at the UNESCO General Conference in November.
