Inflation rises to 1.4% in September

Consumer prices increased significantly in Portugal in the month of September, while in the Eurozone inflation has also exceeded ECB's goals.

The consumer price index (CPI) rose to 1.4% in September compared to the same month in 2017, an acceleration from the previous month (1.2%), the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported on Friday.

The underlying inflation (which excludes energy and unprocessed food products) registered a 0.9% annual rate, while August’s was 0.6%.

Energy inflation decreased to a year-on-year rate of 7.0%, compared to 7.4% from August.

The estimated monthly variation of the CPI is 1.1% in September after -0.3% in August 2018 and 0.9% in September 2017, an average variation of the last 12 months of 1.2%, the same figure registered in the previous month.

As for the harmonised consumer price index (HCPI), which is used to compare Portugal’s statistics with those of other European Union countries, the INE estimates a year-on-year rate of 1.8%, against 1.3% in August.

Final price data for September is to be released on 11 October.
