Trains from Spain should arrive in 2019, and they will reinforce the Portuguese national railway company. CP already rents 20 trains from the Renfe, with a total cost of €7m per year.

Portugal’s national railway company CP- Comboios de Portugal will be signing a protocol in Madrid with Spain’s Renfe on Monday to rent four diesel trains.

The agreement will be signed by the presidents of Renfe and CP, in the presence of Spain’s secretary of state for infrastructure, transport and housing, Pedro Saura, and Portugal’s secretary of state for infrastructure, Guilherme W. d’Oliveira Martins.

The trains from Spain are expected to arrive in Portugal by early 2019.

CP currently has 20 trains rented from Renfe and pays €7 million per year to the Spanish company for their use.

The protocol also seeks to carry out technical tests to enable Portugal to rent electric trains from Renfe.
