Macau imports 29% more products from Portugal

Macau imported products worth €14.4 million from Portugal in the first half of 2018, or 29% more compared with the first half of 2017, the Portuguese Trade and Investment Promotion Agency confirmed.

Macau imported products worth €14.4 million in from Portugal in the first half of 2018, or 29% more compared with the first half of 2017, the Portuguese Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, AICEP, said on Monday.

The information from the Macau delegation of AICEP is based on the latest figures from the Macau Statistics and Census Bureau, released on 31 July.

The food sector, which accounts for over half of what Macau buys from Portugal, saw an uptick of 15% in the first six months of the year, notably wine (+24%), fresh, refrigerated and frozen pork (+43%), olive oil (+16%) and mineral water (+13%).

In beverages imported from Portugal, there was, “an increase of 21% in the first half of 2018, directly related to an increase in the purchase of wine from Portugal,” according to a statement from the Macau delegation of AICEP.

Imports of clothing from Portugal registered a rise of 494% year-on-year in the period.

Machinery and Equipment was the third most imported group of products (14% of the total), rising by 4% on year, followed by pharmaceutical products (8% of the total), which had an “exceptional performance” with a growth rate of 186% in the first half of 2018, the statement said.
