CGD’s administration may indeed resign

CGD’s administrators are relentless in their stand. If the Constitutional Court demands their declarations of income and patrimony, António Domingues’ entire administration will resign.

The administration of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) may, indeed, resign. There are six administrators who do not want to hand in their declaration of income and patrimony, and leaving could be the only possible solution.

This is the stand taken by António Domingues’ team already conveyed to the Government and the President, in case the Constitutional Court (CC) demands the declarations and does not keep them secret until the term of office. Portuguese newspaper Público brings forward that according to a political source, the CGD administration’s stand is not flexible, contrary to initial beliefs. Among the dissatisfied administrators, António Domingues has a list of six managers who do not accept to publicly disclose their income and patrimony.

Both the prime minister António Costa and the President are ready to deal with the resignations if they are to happen. The President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has said CGD’s administration must hand in their declarations to the CC, or otherwise the law should change.

António Domingues was called to the Belém Presidential Palace in order to clarify his situation as CGD’s chairman. Domingues seized the opportunity to explain the three requirements he had for maintaining his job position: have a capitalization without state help assured; free the CGD from salary ceilings; and excuse the administration from having to publicly present their income and patrimony declarations.

Before the stand and impositions made, the government and the President are looking into all possibilities. It is highly unlikely the current administration will continue in office. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa only requested, in their meeting, that Domingues does not resign from his position until at least the public part of CGD’s recapitalization is concluded.
