EDP: “There is nothing specific” about the possible merger with Gas Natural
"There is nothing specific about a merger and, therefore, there is nothing to comment on", EDP's CEO stated concerning rumors of a merger between the Portuguese EDP and the Spanish Gas Natural.
António Mexia, the CEO of EDP, assured this Friday, when in Spain, that “there is nothing specific” about a possibility of merging his company with the Spanish from Gas Natural.
“I believe both companies have said all they had to say. There is nothing specific [about a merger] and, therefore, there is nothing to comment on”, António Mexia stated while in La Malva power station’s 100th birthday, without clarifying if there were any contacts between the companies.
Both country’s press have been disclosing news about Gas Natural wanting a merger with the Portuguese electric company EDP but both companies have been denying any negotiations.
I believe both companies have said all they had to say. There is nothing specific [about a merger] and, therefore, there is nothing to comment on.
In the beginning of September, the Spanish newspaper Expansión revealed that the CEO of Gas Natural was in China, where he contacted China Three Gorges, EDP’s largest shareholder (with a 21.35% equity). By then, ECO also disclosed that Gas Natural leaders were in Lisbon meeting the Portuguese prime minister António Costa, aiming to convince him of the benefits of a possible merger.
