Industrial output up 12.1% in 2021, back to 2019 levels
The largest contributions to the total product sales and services were seen in the manufacture of chemicals and man-made fibres.
Industrial output in Portugal increased by 12.1% to €94.3 billion in 2021 in nominal terms and by 0.2% compared to 2019, Statistics Portugal (INE) announced on Monday.
In a statement released today, INE said that the data is provisional and that sales of products and provision of services in manufacturing industries had been €84.2 billion in 2020 and decreased by 10.6% compared to the previous year.
Regarding the year-on-year change recorded in 2021, INE said that “part of this change is justified by the effect of price increases, given that the industrial production price index (IPPI) recorded a year-on-year increase of 8.7% in 2021.”
The largest contributions to the total product sales and services were seen in the manufacture of chemicals and man-made fibres, except pharmaceutical products, with 1.8 percentage points, followed by basic metallurgical industries, with 1.5 percentage points, and the manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products and fuel pellets, with 1.1 percentage points.
According to the INE, these divisions are among those with the largest changes in industrial production prices in 2021 compared to 2020, highlighting increases of 24.8% in the manufacture of chemicals and man-made fibres, except pharmaceutical products, and 19.6% in Basic metallurgical industries.
The food industries division remained the division with the highest relative weight in total sales and services rendered (13.1%), having grown by 4.3% compared to 2020 and 3.6% compared to 2019.
This division was followed by the manufacture of motor vehicles (with a weight of 9.9% and -0.5% compared to 2020) and the manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products and fuel pellets (with a weight of 7.2% and +16.6% compared to 2020), which only reached 80% of the values obtained in 2019.
Among the most sold products, Gasoils and Marine Diesel stood out, which recorded a growth of 4.2%, compared to -25.2% in 2020, and represented 3.7% of total sales of produced products (compared to 4.0% in 2020).
