Monkeypox cases in Portugal rise to 317
According to DGS, all infections confirmed are in men between 19 and 61 years of age, most under 40, who are in"clinical monitoring, and are stable".
Portugal has registered 13 more cases of infection by the Monkeypox virus, raising to 317 the total number of infected people, who are clinically stable, announced the national health authority on Wednesday.
According to the health authority (DGS), all infections confirmed by the National Health Institute Doctor Ricardo Jorge are in men between 19 and 61 years of age, most under 40, who are in “clinical monitoring, and are stable”.
The DGS, which is monitoring the situation nationally in conjunction with European institutions, also said most infections were reported in Lisbon and Tagus Valley, but there are also records of cases in the North and Algarve regions.
Data from the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) indicate that, to date, 2,746 cases of infection by Monkeypox have been reported in 29 countries across the European region.
According to health authorities, the clinical symptoms of Monkeypox are generally mild, with most infected people recovering from the disease within a few weeks.
Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, developing into a rash.
The incubation period is typically six to 16 days, but can be as long as 21, and when the rash scabs fall off, the infected person is no longer infectious.
