Portugal’s minister of the presidency said on Thursday that the data on the evolution of Covid-19 in Portugal indicates that the “peak” of the new wave of infections has already passed, seeing falls in the incidence in several regions.
This position was conveyed by Mariana Vieira da Silva at a press conference at the end of the cabinet meeting after being asked about the recent evolution of the pandemic in Portugal.
Mariana Vieira da Silva said that on Wednesday, as usual before the cabinet meeting, the minister of health [Marta Temido] met with experts who have supported the government in its decisions.
“At this moment, according to the analysis of the numbers, the peak has passed, with some regions having visible falls and concerning [the incidence] in age groups. For this reason, the cabinet has decided to maintain the measures in force,” she said.
However, Mariana Vieira da Silva did leave a warning: “I want to emphasise that the end of compulsory use of masks, for example, does not mean that the mask should not be used in situations of greater risk.”
