Last year, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 22.8% on the 2021 figure, while those by non-residents jumped 149.8%.

Revenue in Portugal’s tourist accommodation sector in 2022 was more than double that in 2021, and exceeded the levels of 2019 for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, as a result of increases of over 80% in the number of guests and overnight stays, the National Statistics Institute (INE) said on Tuesday.

“For the year 2022 as a whole (preliminary data), the revenue from the tourist accommodation sector grew by 114.7%, in total, and 117.0% in the revenue from accommodation (+16.5% and +17.7%, compared to the same period in 2019, respectively), resulting from 26.5 million guests (+83.3%) and 69.5 million overnight stays (+86.3%),” reads the INE release.

Last year, overnight stays by residents of Portugal increased by 22.8% on the 2021 figure, while those by non-residents jumped 149.8%. The total figure was “very close” to the 2019 level (just 0.9% below it), with the figure for residents up 8.6% on 2019 but that for non-residents down 5.0%.

Once again, overnight stays by non-residents surpassed those of residents, at 67.0% of the total, although their weight in the total was “slightly below” that in 2019 (when they made up 69.9% of the total), according to INE.

Taking into account all means of accommodation – not only tourist accommodation establishments out also campsites and holiday camps, as well as youth hostels – last year there were 28.9 million guests and 77.0 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 80.7% and 80.8%, respectively, the release concludes. When compared with 2019, overnight stays decreased by 1.0% (+5.4% concerning residents and -4.3% regarding non-residents).
