Tourist numbers higher than pre-pandemic
In July, the domestic market contributed 2.9 million overnight stays (+9.1%), and external markets totalled 5.7 million (+205.2%).
Tourist accommodation in Portugal recorded 8.6 million overnight stays in July, up 90.1% compared to the same period the previous year and up 4.8% compared to the same month of 2019, Statistics Portugal (INE) confirmed on Wednesday.
The data, which confirm the quick statistics released by the institute on the last day of August, records 3,000,000 guests in the tourist accommodation sector in July, corresponding to a year-on-year increase of 85.4% and 6.3% compared to July 2019, the pre-pandemic period.
In July, the domestic market contributed 2.9 million overnight stays (+9.1%), and external markets totalled 5.7 million (+205.2%). Compared to July 2019, the domestic market grew by 15.8%, and the external markets reached the same level as in 2019.
Total income in July increased by 131.9% to €682.1 million, and bedroom income reached €535.0 million, reflecting growth of 138.8%. Compared to July 2019, the period before the pandemic, increases of 27.6% were recorded in both.
The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at €86.1 in July, and the average revenue per occupied room (ADR) reached €127.2. Compared to July 2019, RevPAR increased by 23.0%, and ADR grew by 19.0%.
In the first seven months of 2022 as a whole, overnight stays increased by 194.3% (+58.5% in residents and +406.2% in non-residents).
Compared to the same period of 2019, overnight stays decreased by 4.4%, because of the decrease in non-resident overnight stays (-9.4%), as resident stays grew by 7.8%.
The cumulative income from January to July 2022 grew 239.4% in total and 242.9% in room rates (+10.0% and +11.0%, compared to the same period of 2019, respectively).
