Portugal is the EU country where employment grew the most

Employment has increased in Portugal. The data, comparing the third quarter to the second quarter of 2016, show a growth in the amount of job offers.

Employment in Portugal has accelerated in the third quarter of 2016. Compared to other European Union countries, Portugal is ahead when it comes to creating jobs, namely between July and September, in comparison with the second quarter of this year. The data was published this Tuesday by Eurostat.

Employment growth in Portugal, quarter on quarter, was of 1.3% on the third quarter. The Portuguese evolution is the best in Europe, followed by Spain at 0.8% and Luxembourg with 0.7%. Portugal’s numbers where higher than those of the Euro Area and the European Union, both with an increase of 0.2%.

Comparing to the previous year, the best value was from Malta with a 3.8% increase in the third quarter. When making a homologous comparison, Portugal was in the middle of the table with an increase in job creation of 2.2%, a higher percentage than in the first and second quarter: 1.1% and 0.8%, respectively.

That evolution also compares to the one registered in the Euro Area and the European Union, in the comparison between the quarters of 2016 and 2015. In the 19 countries from the Euro Area, employment grew 1.2%. As for the comparison between the Member states, job creation has risen 1.1%.

Eurostat also reveals a record: there are 232.5 million people employed in the European Union in the third quarter, the largest amount ever registered. From that total, also in the third quarter, 153.4 million employed people were part of the Euro Area, the largest amount since the fourth quarter of 2008.
